Fog Tank — Battle City with fog of war

A free browser remake of the 1985 tank classic, rebuilt around one change: you only see what you have line of sight to. The enemy is somewhere in the dark.

What it is

Fog Tank is a free remake of Battle City (Namco, 1985) — the NES game many players know as Tank 1990. You defend your base on a 13×13 single-screen map against waves of enemy tanks, blasting through brick, slipping through gaps, and keeping your eagle alive. If you played the original, the movement, the tank roster, and the power-ups will feel immediately familiar. Fog Tank is an independent homage, not affiliated with or endorsed by Namco.

The fog of war

The map does not hand you the battlefield. You see only what your tank can currently draw a line to, plus a ring of ground your base keeps watch over. Terrain you have already passed stays dimly remembered — you know the wall is there, but not whether something is waiting behind it.

The enemy tanks are hidden by that same fog. They do not hunt you — they push toward your base and fire on a rhythm of their own, the way the original's tanks did — but you never see one until it crosses into your line of sight. Trees block sight and not bullets, so every treeline is a blind spot you still have to cross.

Power-ups glow through the fog, which makes them the most dangerous thing on the map. You can always see the prize. You can never see who else is going for it.

How to play

Default keyboard controls for each player
Action Player 1 Player 2
Move W A S D Arrow keys
Fire Space Ctrl
Quit stage Esc Esc

In single player, both schemes work. The movement and fire keys can be reassigned from the Controls screen, and your bindings are saved in your browser.

A gamepad works too: the d-pad or left stick moves, A fires and confirms menu choices, B goes back and Start pauses. Pads are assigned in the order they connect. On a phone or tablet the d-pad and fire button appear on screen instead. Both are newer than the keyboard layout and still being refined; the gamepad mapping is fixed for now.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fog Tank free?
Yes. It is free to play, with no account, no ads, and nothing to install.
Do I need to download anything?
No. It runs entirely in your browser.
Is this the original Battle City?
No. It is an independent remake inspired by Battle City (Namco, 1985), not affiliated with or endorsed by Namco.
Can I play with a friend?
Yes. Two players share one keyboard, or use two gamepads, along with a single pool of lives and score. The on-screen touch controls drive one tank only, so two-player needs a keyboard or a second pad.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. On a phone or tablet the game puts a d-pad and a fire button on screen, and gamepads work too. Touch and gamepad controls are new and still being tuned, so the keyboard remains the most polished way to play.
Can I make my own levels?
Yes. The built-in editor saves to your browser and exports each level as a short code you can share.
How many levels are there?
35, across five acts.
